A great time in Ocracoke eventually had to come to it's end. Can you believe we actually met a couple from NJ that worked at the ACME and knew Carl Arabia from Carl's Sunoco back in Rahway (my home town). Even remembered me from the racing days at Englishtown. We're talking over 30+ years (yeah, showing our age). A small, small world indeed.
Early bird catches the worm and in this case we were up in time to catch the Captains and First Mates preparing their vessels to take out the adventurous few who dared to face the treacherous waters off the NC coast. Arrrrh matey...go catch some of those amberjacks, dolphins, and maybe even a blue marlin (if your lucky).
We caught the first morning ferry out to travel the almost 2.5 hour trip across Pamilco Sound to the mainland (I guess you could say this was the cruise part of our vacation). Feet dry around 10 a.m. in Cedar Island and the rural route back to Beaufort and Morehead City. We got into Morehead a bit early, so headed to Atlantic Beach where we did some shopping. Then back to Morehead City where we pulled up to the Sanitary Fish Market and Restraunt. Don't let the name fool you, this establishment has been around since the days of Moby Dick. I could spend the day just eating the hush puppies. After an awesome lunch, we headed on back to Atlantic Beach and then made the trek down the island through Emerald Isle and eventually hitting Hwy 24. Hmmmm, do we go right to MCAS Cherry Point or take a left towards Camp Lejune. Semper Fi either way. We decided to go left and head towards Surf City, Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach. Very few pics for the rest of our trip. We pulled into Wrightsville beach and rested our weary soles into a nice beach front suite. The ocean was great and what was needed to cool our now red toned bodies from the long ride down from Morehead City. Kudo's to all the marine spouses and families flying the welcome home signs for our marines in action.
A day, night and one final day to wrap things up in Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington.
Hope you enjoyed our trip as much as we did. I'm ready to do it all over.
